Description
Puja chunri is a traditional ceremonial veil or scarf used in Hindu worship to adorn deities, cover idols and photos, and dress altars during daily puja and festive occasions. Made in a variety of fabrics such as cotton, silk, chiffon, georgette or brocade, it is usually lightweight and rectangular in shape and comes in a rich palette of colours—traditionally reds, saffrons and yellows for auspiciousness, as well as greens, blues and whites—often embellished with zari borders, gota, mirror work, embroidery, printed motifs or bandhani (tie-dye) patterns. The chunri serves both decorative and symbolic purposes: it expresses reverence and devotion, enhances the sanctity of the shrine, and is also used to wrap sacred offerings, cover vessels or present prasad. Designs range from simple solid colours with a metallic border to highly ornate pieces suited for festivals, weddings and temple use, and sizes vary so they can be used as altar cloths, draped over idols or worn as a ceremonial dupatta.
To use a puja chunri, keep it clean and reserved for sacred use, unfold it gently and hold it with both hands so the decorated side faces outward. For dressing an idol or image, drape the chunri over the shoulders or head of the deity and smooth it so it does not touch the floor; for an altar lay it flat or partially cover the sanctum with the decorative edge facing forward. You may secure it with a small tuck or pin if needed, and use it to cover or wrap offerings and prasad during the ritual. After the puja, fold the chunri carefully, store it in a clean, dry place away from everyday items, and launder or dry-clean according to the fabric so it remains bright and suitable for future worship.
